Abby's column prompted me to share my theory of gift-giving. I always try to locate something that the recipient would buy for him- or herself, except for the extravagance--either in price or frivolity. So, I would just add to the suggestion of buying day-to-day items to lavish them up a bit. If you buy clothing, make it cashmere. Choose gourmet food gifts. Buy gazillion thread-count bedsheets. Choose the over-priced perfume. Give the gift of guilt-free self-indulgence!
