Apple offers good products. I don't use them, though. They draw you in and trap you with their over-priced proprietary stuff. Their most recent (and egregious) transgression in this regard was their locking of iPhone users into AT&T for a whopping kickback from the erstwhile Ma Bell. When users tried to use the free market to work around Apple's greedy limitation, Apple released new software that was loaded to the phones automatically, without a chance for the users not to upgrade, which disabled any phone not hooked up to the expensive AT&T. Arrogance. I am coining a term for such corporate arrogance that limits and traps users: Appling. When a corporation locks you into their stuff, in an attempt to force you to use products in a way that enhances their bottom line at the expense of your market choice, they have appled you. Yahoo has been appling me for a while, and I ain't gonna take it anymore! Whenever you use Yahoo's image search, they mix in a majority of Flickr images. That is understandable. They own Flickr and want to promote it. It is slightly annoying, but understandable. How is that appling, though? Well, I'd like to be able to block these images. We cannot include Flickr images in posts here, using the IMG tag. So, when I search for an image to use in a post (like the Times Square image I used in a post to celebrate Son-N-Law's birthday), I want to exclude Flickr images. I can't. Yahoo (and all other search engines) provide a feature for eliminating results that contain words the searcher believes will produce unwanted results. I should be able to type "-Flickr" in my search criteria and eliminate every result that contains the word. That feature does not work in this instance. I can only assume that Yahoo has arrogantly decided that I am going to get a majority of Flickr images for every search whether I want them or not. They must have added code that deliberately ignores "-Flickr." Well, I won't be getting that majority of Flickr images. Although I prefer Yahoo over Google, in general, and use it for almost all services that both provide, I now search for images using Google. I have expressed my concern to Yahoo about this issue. If they don't change this applish feature, I will move away from Yahoo--including my pay services, such as my use of Yahoo to provide the domain name of this site. I don't do business with companies that apple me. Has a company appled you? Who? And, how? Tell us in this thread. |
