If the board disappeared from view for an hour, it is just because we changed our provider of domain name services. Look for the all-new eye95.com, coming soon. This board will become a subfeature of that site.

I just noted this on the site...

"Most users ever online was 14 on Dec 17 2006, 09:03 AM"

So what was so special on December 17? I checked my calendar, Chanukah shopping, coaching two swim practices, carpooling one kid to confirmation class...

We got botted. It's how search engines find that content that is displayed when you google or yahoo.

We just got botted again. Big time. This time over 200 bots from Yahoo are crawling all over the site, recording all of our posts so that they will show up when people use Yahoo for an Internet search.

The downside is that the real visitor surge from the Dr. Laura site has been masked.

What is "botted"? I'm new to message boards and don't know all the "language".

Thanks.

A bot (short for robot) is a program that simulates a human user. Web search services, like Yahoo, use bots to scour the web for content. This is how they know what is out there.

Bots are the reason that you have to copy some swirly number when you sign up for a site or try to buy tickets online. Humans can "see" the numbers. Bots cannot. Bots can visit sites; they just can't join. That's good.

BTW, some message boards don't allow non-members to view them. That is a mistake. It prevents botting, which cuts into a major source of new members: Internet searches for content.
