Iraq couldn't defeat the United States any more than a few bees could defeat me in a fight. That I don't choose to fight a few bees and get stung is not defeatism, it's wisdom. If the United States doesn't drastically change it's foreign policy to a less-offensive, more-diplomatic, and solely-defensive approach, then it will be the end of the United States. Anyone who would resort to terrorism is a disgusting creature who can go off and die as far as I'm concerned. The world would be better off without them. However, it's still dangerously stupid for the United States to go around the world angering potential terrorists, in the same way it is dangerously stupid to taunt a rabid dog or go through the woods finding bears to pick fights with. The War In Iraq was an expensive mistake from the start, and it's an expensive mistake to continue. The best thing for the United States people is for the United States government to create and implement an exit strategy ASAP. Granted, the War In Iraq was good for Big Oil, the military-industrial complex, Halliburton, etcetera. Thanks to the high-value of reconstruction contracts, I'd be shocked if our special-interest-controlled government actually left Iraq anytime soon. IMO, the only way the U.S. has any chance of surviving in the world is if it takes on a foreign policy similar to Canada or Costa Rica. Out of all the countries on this hemisphere, there's a reason why (non-Iraqi) middle-eastern terrorists (allegedly) attacked the United States. (Please note, I'm not excusing what they did in any way.) It's that reason that will cause America's downfall, if such shall come. A government-run war on terror is as successful as the government-run war on drugs and war on poverty. The use of offensive violence and interfering in other countries affairs only makes the problem worse. Iraq never posed a threat and it doesn't pose a threat now. In fact, the only threat that seems effective against the U.S. is grass-roots terrorist movements, such as 9/11 (allegedly) was. The war in Iraq has increased such a threat. Since it's United States troops filling bloody-Iraq, the new generation of terrorists that are now growing there will be inclined to attack the United States. There will always be nutjobs and terrorists in the world, but United States foreign policy and the war in Iraq not only increases the prevalence of terrorism, but also aggravates the terrorists towards the United States. Additionally, we can rest assure that the United States government is placing in power and supporting the Saddam Huessins of tommorrow today.
Interestingly, the late and great Martin Luther King agrees with funny-man Dennis Miller that the U.S. is doomed:
It's from his speech, Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam, which is still relevant today if you ask me. |

| If you see our enemies as mere annoyances, like bees, then some of your opinions logically follow. However, that analogy is inapt. I would just encourage you to rethink that one. |

It is hard to know what threats are real and which were created by men with bribe money in thier freezer. I have way too little knowledge of thehowle situation to even try to judge which threats are real. BUt whether we should have been in Iraq or not, Scott is correct that, long term, terrorism may be overcome more with socially uplifting policies and programs. |

Interesting article Here is an interesting article supporting Eye's opinion that terrorists are more than mere annoyances. |
