In the first round, the US faced elimination and beat it down with a 17-0 drubbing of South Africa. They face elimination again in the second round. This time they have a slightly tougher opponent: Mexico. Team USA has already beaten Mexico once, but Baseball is probably the major sport where upsets in any single game are the most likely. The ageless Roger Clemens will start for the North-of-the-Rio-Granders, in what quite probably will be his swan song. Good luck to him. The US advances to the single-elimination final four with a win, first facing Korea, the team that placed them in this precarious position. However, they can also advance with a loss to or a tie with Mexico. In the event of a loss, the US is in a three-way tie with Japan and Mexico. Should the game end in a tie, the US will be tied in the standings only with Mexico. The tie-breaker is RA/9 only to the other teams involved in the tie. That creates some tricky arithmetic. Fortunately, the WBC site has kindly provided the following list of possibilities. Mexico has a tough row to hoe. They need a 3-run walk-off HR with two outs in the 13th to advance! U.S. advances if: --It defeats Mexico --It loses to Mexico, allowing 1 run in a regulation game (8 innings in the field) --It loses to Mexico, but does not allow a 2nd run until after it has played 8 2/3 innings in the field --It loses to Mexico, but does not allow a 3rd run until after it has played 12 1/3 innings in the field --It ties with Mexico, allowing 3 runs in 14 innings Japan advances if: --The U.S. loses to Mexico, and allows 2 runs or more before it has played 8 2/3 innings in the field --The U.S. loses to Mexico, and allows 3 runs or more before it has played 12 1/3 innings in the field Mexico advances if: --It defeats the U.S., 3-0, in 13 innings |
